Know your Paint

We continue today with more on paint. Lots of people use the wrong paint on surfaces without realising and do not understand why the finish is poor. The tips below will help you choose the right paint from what paint to use in kitchens and bathrooms to what paint gives a finish without any brush marks.
KNOW YOU PAINT

Ceiling distemper
For use on ceilings. Not washable

Oil bound water paint
Use on indoor walls & ceilings. Washable

Plastic emulsion paint
This gives a hard wearing & washable surface. It dries quickly without brush marks & is easy to use with a roller.

Flat oil paint
Has suede & eggshell finishes & is especially suitable for kitchens & bathrooms

Semi gloss paint
An undercoat for gloss paint

Gloss paint
Very hard wearing paint for in & outside. Tends to leave brush marks unless used carefully. For best results use undercoat 1st

Enamels & synthetic lacquer paint
These give a gloss finish. Quick drying with no brush marks.Use generally on small areas as expensive.

Jelly paint
Has a gloss finish & is non drip

Rubberised paint
Especially made for kitchens & bathrooms as has a steam resistant finish

One coat paint
No primer required if painting on hardboard. It can be used over wallpaper or any flat paint.

QUANTITIES

1qt/1200ml undercoat covers about 240sq ft (22sq m)
1qt/1200ml emulsion covers about 200sq ft (18.5sq m )
1qt/1200ml priming paint - approx 130sq ft (12sq m )
