Gardening Tips

Some hints and tips today to help you garden flourish.

Wonderful plant food (20g) Epsom salts dissolved in (550ml) lukewarm water.

Banana skins & egg shells buried will supply vitamins & minerals for roots

Garlic grown near roses is suppose to keep away greenfly

Eggshells ground finely are a good fertiliser, also a slug deterrent.

Cover compost heap with black bin liner weighed down for the quickest conditions for rotting.

Hold on to rotten nettles. Leave in water for 2-3 weeks for a strong smelling unrivalled fertiliser.

Talc powder can get rid of ants.

An old bike pump can be used as a bug killer spray.

Sprinkle salt to get rid of slugs, weeds on grass & paths.

Another slug deterrent is soot or coal

Water with bleach can help clean paths patios of green fungi, but a little elbow grease will be needed.

Mark your tool handles with measurements (very handy)

A soapy steel wool pad dipped in paraffin will clean rust.

Put a mixture of raw linseed oil & powdered charcoal in holes for new fence posts to stop them rotting.

After planting seeds put packet in old jam jar & put at end of the row to remember whats where.

FORESEE PROBLEMS

Remember where the sunny spots of your garden are. Plant plants accordingly.

Avoid container grown plants that slide out of there pots easily &shrubs or plants with brown patches, when buying.

Keep plants well watered in 1st season of planting . Especially during dry spells.

Avoid overcrowding as it encourages mildew & other diseases.

Inspect plants regularly to catch problems early.

Remember most plants or shrubs need feeding, especially in early growing season. As well as information on packets there are a number of good gardening books available.
