Today's hints and tips are for the ironing. These little hints and tips will take some of the hard work out of this task.
IRONING
Learn to iron while sitting down, and save your legs. If you prefer to stand, slip off your shoes and stand on a large soft cushion, which will ease your feet and prevent tiredness.
Ordinary tap water may be used in a steam iron if a tbsp (20ml) ammonia is used to each cup of water. Ammonia softens the water. Ammoniated water also makes it smoother for ironing.
Use melted ice from the fridge tray as sterilised water for your steam iron.
After filling a steam iron, wait until it has reached the pre-set temperature
Before using, or it may drip and leave a water mark on the fabric.
Keep a small piece of damp sponge handy when ironing.
When there is a dry crease, rub the sponge over it and the fabric will be lightly and evenly dampened.
If the base of your iron is stained or sticky, unplug and rub it with a cloth dipped in vinegar or methylated spirit.
To prevent an iron from sticking to soft silky fabrics, sprinkle a soft rag with talcum powder and rub the base of the iron with it occasionally.
To clear a clogged iron, use 1 cup (250ml) vinegar instead of water and steam until the jets released.
Remove brown stains from the base of iron with a soap-pad.
To iron pleated skirts easily and quickly, fix pegs to the bottom of the pleats.
To press a jacket sleeve without making a crease, roll up a thick magazine, cover with a cloth and insert it into the sleeve. It will immediately unroll and make a firm ironing pad.
Creases in trousers stay in better if you rub them on the inside with a piece of soap. Then iron correct way. This also works when letting down hems.
A weak solution of ammonia 5ml to 550ml warm water will remove shine. Dab on with sponge , then iron on warm setting using damp cloth.
Another hint to remove crease mark is to rub with salt & damp cloth
Steam helps remove creases, if no iron hang item on bathroom door whilst shower or bathing.
Cover your ironing board with foil under the cover. It helps to reflect heat.
Hang dark items inside out to keep free from dust fluff etc.
Afro comb rugs after a wash for extra fluff.
